Overview
OscarPOS Cloud allows you to MODIFY an ITEM added to an ORDER.
- Item Comment
- Common Modifiers
- Related Modifiers
Please review the three alternate methods in this KB article to decide which is the best for you.
- If you intend to use one of our ONLINE ORDERING options, either now or in the future, using the correct method right now will save you a lot of time in the future.
- If you have no intention of going ONLINE, then you can just use COMMON MODIFIERS and rely on your staff to make the right selections.
This discussion is about RELATED MODIFIERS and we are using them because we need to force / limit / control how an ITEM can be MODIFIED by an ONLINE shopper.
I have also thrown in some COMMON MODIFIERS as a compare and contrast.
Steak, with Chips or Mash and Optional Extras
By example is going to be easier – I hope 🙂
When you send the ORDER for the steak to the kitchen, Chef is going to want to know how to cook it :
- blue
- rare
- medium / rare
- medium
- medium / well
- well done
Your customer also has the option of selecting :
- chips
- mash
- NO chips / NOÂ mash
We also do NOT want the ORDER going to the kitchen if this information is missing, but we only want the customer to be able to select one of each.
You then want to offer your customer possible add-ons / up-sells
- ADD wedges
- ADD pepper gravy
- ADD red wine jus
- ADD prawns
Generally you don’t care how many extras they add – so long as they pay for them. These extras can also be used on many dishes. It would also be nice that if you added a new extra, you only had to add it in one place, rather than on every possible MENU ITEM.
1 Create the MENU ITEM
Check out this KB Article to create you basic MENU ITEM.
Don’t forget to <UPDATE>.
2 Create RELATED MODIFIER for “How to Cook it”
Now go in and <EDIT> your basic MENU ITEM and select the RELATED MODIFIER tab.
Using the left hand pane, add your available cooking choices make the max qty of each = 1.
Looks good so far, but we need to put these possible options into the same MODIFIER GROUP.
Use your mouse to grab, drag & drop each RELATED MODIFIER into the same MODIFIER GROUP and put them into the ORDER you want them to appear.
Now that you have all your RELATED MODIFIERS in the same GROUP, you want to force a selection but only a single selection.
Click the edit / pen icon and set the GROUP as Group Max = 1 and make it NOT optional.
Don’t forget to <OK> and <UPDATE>
3 Create RELATED MODIFIER for “Chips or Mash”
This could be done a couple of different ways
You could create another RELATED MODIFIER GROUP, just like above, with 2 RELATED MODIFERS in ( “chips” “mash” ), make max qty = 1 and make it optional.
But to avoid the potential for a customer to “forget” to make a selection, my preference is to create another RELATED MODIFIER GROUP, just like above, with 3 RELATED MODIFIERS in ( “chips” “mash” “no chips / no mash” ), make max qty = 1 and make it not optional.
This way, the POS APP, WEB APP, MOB APP will ask for how to cook the steak, and if you want chips, mash or none. They won’t let you proceed without making a selection.
4 Create COMMON MODIFIERS for the Extras
